Most of us are not strangers to slipping up during job interviews. The best way to avoid making mistakes is to be aware of what they are.
Below are 6 of the most common interview mistakes:
- Showing up late
- Arriving too early
- Dressing inappropriately
- Lack of enthusiasm
- Seeming unprepared
- Not having any questions
1. Showing Up Late
Your arrival time will essentially be the very first impression the employer will have of you.
Showing up late will not only showcase bad time management skills, but also a lack of respect for the company and your interviewer.
Prepare for unforeseen circumstances by aiming to get to the interview at least an half hour before the scheduled time. If however, something out of your control does happen, inform the company.
2. Arriving Too Early
There is such a thing as arriving too early!
Hiring managers most likely have more than one interview scheduled for the day. And if you arrive too early, this could definitely irritate the interviewer as it disrupts their schedule .
Aim to arrive at the location at least 10-30 minutes before the interview starts.
3. Dressing Inappropriately
Your outfit is one of the first things employers see when they meet you. Looking put together will show hiring managers a certain amount of effort and that you actually care about the interview.
The dress code may vary based on the line of work and position you are applying for. But no matter what attire fits the job description, ensure that you look polished and professional.
4. Lack of Enthusiasm
During the interview, hiring managers generally want answers that express enthusiasm towards the position you are applying for. Here are a few things to avoid doing:
- Giving short answers
- Lack of eye contact
- Answering with low energy
5. Seeming Unprepared
A job interview is essentially where the interviewer will decide whether you are a right fit for the company or not.
If you fail to demonstrate a basic understanding of the role and the company, you will come across as unprepared. Practice your answers for the most common interview questions here.
6. Having No Questions
At the end of the interview, more often than not, the hiring manager will ask if you have any questions for them.
Not having any questions prepared showcases disinterest, lack of enthusiasm or that you have not done your research.
