How Can I Upgrade My Matric?

If you want to improve your previous matric results, you can do so by completing a Matric Upgrade course. You can choose to upgrade all of your subjects or choose the specific subjects you want to improve upon.

Matric Upgrade Course Details

The Matric Upgrade has the following course details:

  • Course name: Amended Senior Certificate
  • Programme type: National Qualification
  • Accredited and awarded by: Umalusi
  • Course duration: 12 or 24 months (recommended)
  • NQF level 04


A Matric Upgrade qualification is awarded by Umalusi and on an NQF level 04. This is the same as a standard matric certificate and will be viewed in the same way.


Matric Upgrade Entry Requirements

In order to start your Matric Upgrade course, you will need the following:

  • Your previous matric results
  • A certified copy of your ID
  • To be able to read and write either in English or Afrikaans
  • To be 21 years or older by the time of your final examinations


Once you have successfully completed your Matric Upgrade, your previous results will be combined with your new results. Your best marks will be presented in the form of a single matric certificate.

When completing a matric course, you have to pick the right subjects. Some things you should consider when choosing your subjects include:

  • Thinking about subjects that you will be confident about. It is a good idea to choose subjects that you know you can pass 
  • Picking subjects that will be relevant to your future career or further studies

Completing A Matric Upgrade Through Distance Learning

You can apply for a Matric Upgrade course if you meet the following requirements:

  • You must have written matric before and have your previous results
  • You can apply once you are 19, but you must be at least 21 years old when you write your final matric exams
  • You must be able to read and write in English or Afrikaans

Upgrading your matric results will allow you to improve your previous marks. You have the opportunity to get your marks to the point where you can use them to further your studies or apply for job opportunities.

You will need to pass your matric on a Bachelor’s Degree Level in order to apply for a university course. You will also need specific subjects and or pass rates. Completing a Matric Upgrade could allow you to meet these requirements.

A Matric Upgrade takes a minimum of 12 months to complete. If you need more time to study your subjects or prepare for your exams, you can choose to complete the course over 24 months.

Qualifications that are on an NQF level 4 are equivalent to matric which is on an NQF level 04.

No, you cannot buy a matric certificate. Buying a matric certificate is regarded as a legal offense that is punishable by time in jail and or fines. You will also miss a foundational educational level, so buying a matric certificate is not an opinion.

Matric Equivalent Certificates are on the same educational level as a standard matric certificate (NQF level 04). You will be on an NQF level 04 while focusing on a specific study direction rather than completing a matric course. These courses are career-specific and suit those who want to follow the specific study stream.
