How Do I Get My National Diploma?

The National Diploma is your final academic qualification. To gain all National credentials, you can study a full NATED or ICB course programme at Bellview.

To obtain your diploma, you will need to register for your National N Diploma course, and then complete 18-months of industry specific training, which is commonly referred to as work experience. After successfully completing the work experience, you can then submit your request for your National Diploma, by completing the DHET’s National N Diploma application form.

What Do I Need For My National Diploma?

To register for your National Diploma course, you will need to have completed and gained all the relevant N-Level Certificates. Your National N Certificates are the theoretical courses you need to complete, prior to obtaining your National Diploma.

To register for your National Diploma, the N-Level Certificates you are required to have in the relevant field includes the following:

  • N4 National Certificate
  • N5 National Certificate
  • N6 National Certificate


You will only be eligible for your National Diploma course once you have obtained all the relevant N4 – N6 Certificates of a specific field.

You will study four subjects during each course level, and will be required to complete various assessments and exams. After successfully completing all four subjects, the relevant certificate will be awarded to you.


18-Month Practical Training

During your course, with the relevant knowledge and skills gained in your N Certificate courses, you will need to complete 18-months of practical training. During your training, you will be required to complete various job-related tasks that will help you gain the necessary experience in your relevant career path.


Logbook

Your National N Diploma: Logbook will hold a detailed list of all the tasks you will be to complete during your 18-months of training. The logbook will serve as proof of your practical experience, when applying for your diploma. 

Once your 18-months of training is over, your logbook must be signed by your employer, and be included in your application. The Logbook assigned to you will hold tasks relevant to your line of work, and the field you have studied in.


National Diploma Application Process

After completing your course, the only step missing is applying for your National Diploma. You will have to apply through the institution where you have completed your studies for your diploma. The institution will then submit your application to the DHET.

To apply for your Diploma, you will need to have the following documents in hand:

  • A completed application form done through your study institution
  • Certified copies, no older than three months, of your:
    • N4 National Certificate
    • N5 National Certificate
    • N6 National Certificate
    • Identity document
    • Statement of results
  • A letter from your employer, containing:
    • Your Logbook, completed and signed (Job description stating what your duties were)
    • Specific dates of your work experience
    • A Certificate of Service, that confirms you have worked for 18-months or more

Frequently Asked Questions

Once you have completed the application process for your National N Diploma with the DHET, you will receive it in less than three months. Remember, you must first complete the N4, N5, and N6 certificate levels, followed by 18 months of relevant practical work experience before you can apply to receive your diploma. This can take up to 36 months to do. 

A National N Diploma is on an NQF Level 06. This means it is a post-matric qualification that sits just below a bachelor’s degree. It shows that you have both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in your chosen field of study.

No, you cannot go to university with a National N Diploma. Entrance to university is determined by:

  • Your Matric pass level
  • Your APS score
  • The subjects you have chosen in high school

To receive a National N Diploma, you will need to have all N4 – N6 National Certificates in a relevant field. To obtain these N4-N6 certificates you will need to have a matric certificate. If you do not have a matric certificate you can complete one of our matric courses to obtain it and eventually apply for your diploma.
