How to Become a Bookkeeper

If you are considering a role as a future bookkeeper, then you are in luck! As a bookkeeper you aren’t usually required to have any specific qualifications behind your name. However, you are required to have the knowledge and skills of someone who does.

What Does a Bookkeeper Do?

As a bookkeeper, you are responsible for the management and tracking of a company’s income and expenses. Also, you will be responsible for the recording of all financial transactions, which will usually be reviewed by an accountant. 

Your daily tasks will include:

  • Recording sales
  • Filing receipts
  • Reconciling expenses
  • Managing payroll
  • Managing bills payment
  • Producing financial reports for record keeping purposes 

What Skills Do You Need?

As mentioned above, to become a bookkeeper a qualification isn’t always necessary. In fact, the skills you have are more than enough to land a job in this role. Some of the skills you need to have in your skill-set include:

Basic computer skills – In this day and age, this is a skill that most jobs require as hardly anything is done manually anymore. It is vital to know how to use basic computer programmes and even some accounting software programmes as a bookkeeper.

Multi-tasking – If you are planning to work as an independent bookkeeper, freelancing for multiple clients. You need to be able to multitask really well in order to give each client the same standard of work while juggling them all at once.

Organised –  As a bookkeeper, it is essential to stay organised and focused, and know how to prioritise work accordingly. This will prevent you from falling behind in your day to day tasks when new work is handed to you to complete urgently. 

Attention to detail –  A single error can cause great problems for the company, even just missing one number. Attention to detail is a skill that bookkeepers need to have as accuracy is very crucial in this profession.

Problem solving –  In most financial roles it is important to have good problem solving skills. To be able to quickly pick up mistakes and correct them in order to avoid any financial risks arising in the business.

How Much Can You Earn?

As a bookkeeper, your monthly pay depends on whether you decide to work for yourself as an independent bookkeeper or for a company. 

Independent bookkeepers can set their own rates per client. With this in mind, your monthly salaries won’t always be the same, sometimes you may earn more, other times less.

Or you could fill the position of the bookkeeper for a company, who will pay you a fixed amount per month. 

According to PayScale and Indeed, the average salary of a Bookkeeper is R14 500 per month.
