There are many ways to find funding for your studies, but waiting for bursary application results can be stressful. Why not try and raise the money yourself? Here are ways to do so:
- Sell Things You Don’t Need
- Work for Family
- Send Letters
- Approach the Locals
- Organise a Fundraising Party
- Make it Public
- Use Crowdfunding Websites
- Be Patient
Sell Things You Don’t Need
People are always on the lookout for second hand items– from books and clothes, to furniture.
There are many ways to sell these products. Using online platforms, such as OLX, is a convenient way to get rid of the things you don’t need and make some money from it.
You could also talk to your friends and family about buying from you.
Work for Family
There is always a chore that needs to be done. Asking your family members if they are willing to pay you for helping them, is a great way to make money. You don’t need any qualification and you can do the job in the comfort of a place you know.
If you are serious about studying, you should tell people that. Write letters to friends, teachers, or lecturers, explaining what your situation is.
Don’t write a letter asking for charity, rather ask people to support your dreams. You could also state that you want to repay them once you are able to.
Approach the Locals
When you are trying to raise money in a more informal manner, it is a good idea to reach out to local stores in your town or city.
The owners of small businesses may be willing to sit down and listen to your plans. It’s all about connecting with people, so that they get to know you.
It is also a good idea to offer to do holiday work.
Organise a Fundraising Party
Having a fundraising party is a fun way to raise money and give people something back as well.
Ways you can raise money at your party:
- Have a lucky draw competition where guests buy tickets.
- Ask your guests for an entry fee.
Hosting a fundraising party will also give you the opportunity to tell people about your studies and the goals you want to achieve.
Make it Public
In order to raise as much money as possible, you need the public’s help. There are many ways you can reach out to the public, such as:
- Creating a blog
- Making a video and sharing it on social media
- Asking a newspaper to write an article about you
If you decide to make it public, make sure to include many people and organisations. For example, tagging the college you want to study at in your Instagram post.
Use Crowdfunding Websites
There are many crowdfunding websites which allows you to create a profile where you can tell your story and reach out to possible sponsors.
It is important that you put effort into your profile, so that it attracts attention. Don’t look too demanding, but don’t be afraid to promote yourself.
Raising money for your studies can take a long time. Therefore, you should start early.
Remember not to be discouraged when a lot of people say no. Just keep on trying and you will find someone who is willing to help.
Never reject a small amount of money. Every last bit helps!
