Tips to stand out at work

Stand out employees are anything but silent. If you want to move up in your career, you first need to be present in it. We have gathered some tips to guide you through your journey up the workplace hierarchy.

  1. Own up to mistakes
  2. Be proactive
  3. Lend a helping hand
  4. Take the lead, if possible
  5. Work harder than everyone else
  6. Take up a course

Own up to mistakes

Mistakes are unavoidable but what really matters is how you handle them. It can be hard to swallow your pride when an issue occurs under your watch but taking responsibility is one of the best ways to stand out. It shows a great deal of maturity and commitment to the company you work for. With that being said, you should do all you can to fix it!

Be proactive

Instead of being the “reactive” employee, be proactive. Someone who is reactive tends to wait for things to happen before they act — as opposed to ready to act on one’s own. An employee that stands out amongst the rest, knows how to anticipate problems and even the needs of their employer before it has been communicated.

This goes hand in hand with going above the job description. There are always moments where you know you can do more if you wanted to, cease these moments.

Lend a helping hand

Be the person others can rely on. The best employees spend a lot of their time helping other people succeed: The company, their customers and coworkers… the list goes on.

By offering to help others, you’ll be known as a reliable employee—one most companies wouldn’t want to lose.

Take the lead, if possible

There needs to be a leader, so why not you?  If that’s not possible, stand out at work by contributing at a higher level. Share your ideas and challenge things that you think can be improved. If you’re able to do this respectfully, you will be remembered.

Being silent will only get you overlooked. Be present in your career and try to take the lead.

Work harder than everyone else

There is no substitute for a hard worker. Very few people give 100% to their job. If you’re serious about being an invaluable employee, you would have to fully commit and apply yourself to the job.

So why not out-work everyone else while you’re at it?

Take up a course

Furthering your knowledge of your career is the ultimate way to flex within the workplace. Your newfound expertise will not go unnoticed by your superiors. By doing a course through distance learning you are still able to learn and be present at work.
