Making a career change can be overwhelming and stressful. Step out of your comfort zone and make the most out of this new opportunity by following these 6 tips for your career change:
- Be willing to start over
- Make an impression
- Find your tribe
- Don’t be afraid to speak up
- Get to know the culture
- Familiarise yourself with your surroundings
Be Willing to Start Over
A mistake new employees tend to make is talking about their old company or position constantly. Or comparing the old one with the new one.
Refrain from talking negatively about your previous job, or making comparisons between the two.
A career change is a new beginning, embrace the fresh start and move forward.
Make an Impression
Oftentimes, you may feel like an “imposter” walking into a new team. Walk in with confidence and make good impressions throughout the whole company.
Follow these tips to leave a good impression:
- Dress to impress
- Arrive on time
- Introduce yourself
- Be positive
- Take initiative
Find your Tribe
Starting a new job can be exciting, but it can also be intimidating walking into one where everyone has already found their feet.
Find someone who has walked the same path you are on and connect with them. Not only will they be able to give you great advice, but could teach you the ins and outs.
Or maybe find someone who started at the same time as you. This way you won’t feel alone and can support each other.

Speak Up
Learning the ropes in a new job can be hard. No one expects you to know everything on day one. So don’t be afraid to ask questions when you need help. This way you can do things right the first time.
Also, don’t be afraid to speak up and add some value. If you have suggestions, bring them to the team. But be careful not to sound arrogant and like a “know-it-all”.
Get to Know the Culture
You were hired not only because you were a great fit for the position, but for the company too.
Familiarise yourself with the company’s culture as soon as possible. Get to know their style of work, their rules and their values.
Taking the time to observe the company’s culture will show that you are a team player and they made the right decision hiring you.
Familiarise your Surroundings
If you haven’t already been given a tour of the company, find someone willing to give you one or go and explore a bit.
Get to know where everything in the company is, such as your office, the lunch area and kitchen, restrooms and printing facilities.
