Working in your dream job is the ultimate career goal. Achieving it should be an important priority and here are a few steps to follow when planning for your dream career:

  1. Evaluate your current position
  2. Know where you want to go
  3. Complete a gap analysis
  4. Set up a concrete plan
  5. Re-evaluate

Evaluate your current position

Reflect on the position you are in currently and your life circumstances at the moment. The first question to ask yourself is if you are where you want to be. Is this how you always dreamt your life would be? Next, ask yourself:

  • Are you embracing your strengths and passions currently?
  • Are you motivated to do the job?
  • Do you tell your friends about all the exciting things you do at work?
  • Are you constantly thinking about taking on new projects?
  • Does your job fit your calling in life?

Consider these questions and be realistic about whether you are happy.

Know where you want to go

Firstly, you need to visualise your dream job. You can be as imaginative as possible. This means that you don’t have to think about the difficulties or complications. You can just write down your dreams freely.

Secondly, you should start looking at your skills. Which skills do you have that are in line with your big dream? This is where you need to think about current opportunities that may lead you into the direction you desire. Maybe it is a project at work or an entrepreneurial pitch.

Thirdly, plan your path ahead. Envision the next five years of your career. Now it is time to set up a realistic and doable plan to get to your dream job. This can be done by looking into long-term opportunities such as building yourself up to CEO, or acquiring the needed qualifications and experience to land on your dream job.

Complete a gap analysis

A gap analysis is an in-depth investigation on where you are now and where you want to be. It looks as follows:

Explore your dream career

Find out more about your dream job by researching the various job titles in the career path.

Know what skills and qualifications are needed for the specific positions.

Talk to professionals in the field

It is always best to get in touch with someone that is experiencing the job firsthand. This way you can find out more about the know-how of the position and how the person got there. It will be very helpful to write down the person’s career story, so that you can duplicate their steps.

Talking to such a professional may also open doors regarding networking.

Examine your skills

Once you determine what skills you need for your dream job, you need to examine your current skills. This will enable you to see which skills are efficient and what needs to improve.

You could make a list of the required skills and divide them into three categories, namely, strong, average and weak skills.

Set up a concrete plan

This step is on the same track as the gap analysis. The gap analysis enabled you to think about where you are and where you want to be. Setting up a concrete plan is about providing steps in detail. Here are ways you can do so:

Complete tasks

Now you need to create opportunities and show up! If you need to complete a course on a skill you have to improve, you must start right away. Maybe you have to learn how to deal with stress, then you need to take action by joining a stress management class.

Set deadlines

It is extremely important to put deadlines in place for the specific tasks. As a result you will feel more obligated to complete tasks and start with new ones.

To keep you on your toes, you can ask a friend or even a professional career advisor to check if you reach your deadlines.

Do an evaluation every now and then to see if you are still on the right track. You can do this by revisiting all your goals and determining if you will need more time to reach a certain point.

Dreams are not always set in stone. Therefore, it is necessary to have a look at all the stepping stones you have set, so that you can adjust them.
