Read and Understand the Exam Guidelines

There are a few things you need to take note before writing your online exams, such as:

  • Time and date of exam – when will the exam take place?
  • Duration of exam – will it be spread out or is there one fixed time?
  • Location exam needs to be completed – home or a specific location?
  • Additional information – are there any other important things to know from lecturers?

Know the Exam Format

Find out what type of questions the exam paper will consist of.

Will it be multiple choice, written answers, essay questions? Or perhaps a combination of types?

Test Yourself

Oftentimes, mock tests will be made available to you. This is usually to help you prepare for the exam and to get familiar with the online process.

Your textbooks will most likely consist of practice tests too, take them.

Check your Computer

To avoid any issues during the exam check your computer.

Make sure that you have a stable internet connection and that your computer is fully functional. And ensure that you have all the correct hardware and software well in advance.

Study the Class Materials

Even if the exam is an open book test, it is still important to see it as one that is not.

Study all your materials thoroughly and make sure that you feel confident and know your course work.

Plan your Time

When you are testing yourself, take the duration time of the exam into consideration. Try and complete your mock tests in the allocated time of the actual exam.

Take note of the amount of questions the paper will consist of and determine how long you will spend on each question.

Find a Quiet Spot with No Distractions to Take your Exam

You will need a quiet spot with absolutely no distractions to write your online exam.

  • Make sure your phone is off
  • Switch off the TV and the radio
  • Let others know not to interrupt you
  • Remove any objects that will be a distraction

Determine When you Will Write your Exam

Some exams may need to be written at a specific time, while others may be spread out over a specific period of time.

If that is the case, then determine what time you will take the exam. Choose a time that you know there will be less distractions, interruptions and stress.

Get Everything you Will Need Ready

Make sure you are completely ready and have everything you need before starting the test.

If you need any notes, textbooks, paper, pens, calculators, or anything else, be sure that they are all at hand before starting.

Take a Deep Breath

Once you are logged in and ready to take your exam, take a moment to relax. Stay focused and breathe, then start writing.

During the Online Exam

Online exams generally do have more things to be careful of, and things to do in order to make sure it goes smoothly. Such as:

  • Keep an eye on the time – You can set alarms for the start and end of the exam. Setting an alarm to notify you when you have limited time left would be a great idea.
  • Make sure you have copies of your answers written down or saved on your computer. If you have any issues during your test, this will prevent you from having to redo all your answers.
  • Don’t leave the page. If you need to open up a new tab to search something, rather open up a second browser. This will ensure that nothing goes wrong and you do not lose your work.
  • If you have any technical problems, contact your instructor immediately. Let them know exactly what happened, and perhaps provide a screenshot.
  • Before submitting your work, make sure that all the questions are answered. Go over your answers and make sure you are confident with them.
  • Once you are done, click submit. If you have any problems submitting, let your instructor know. Prepare your intended answers in a document in case they require that.
