The SQ3R study strategy is comprised of five simple steps:
- Survey
- Question
- Read
- Recite
- Review
Opening up your textbooks to prepare for exams generally requires a completely different reading method than what you may use when relaxing with a magazine or book. With this in mind, the SQ3R strategy was created to encourage students to read with purpose.
1. Survey
The first step when applying this strategy is to survey the text from which you are studying.
A quick scan over the text will create a broad initial understanding of the topic. As well as, activate any knowledge you may already have of the contents.
This gives you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with any new terms.
What to keep in mind when surveying:
- The introduction & conclusion
- The objectives
- Bolded words
- Headings and subheadings
- Pictures and diagrams
2. Question
The next step is to formulate questions based on the information you have gathered.
Create questions from the headings and subheadings. List any additional questions of your own that may have arisen while surveying the text.
This step allows your brain to analyse and further comprehend what you have pre-read.
3. Read
In this step, you will answer the questions you have listed down.
Do this by actively reading through the text again and underline any relevant information.
Be sure to answer the questions in your own words as this will also aid with comprehension.
This step will help you highlight the key study points.
4. Recite
Recite the key points you have identified under each subheading. Either read it aloud or write on paper a few times.
Reciting or rewriting the most important information will help with keeping it in your long-term memory.
5. Review
The review step is extremely vital in ensuring that you understand the material as a whole and that your notes make sense to you.
Refer back to your questions and test yourself.
For the best results, review your work regularly. Whether it be weekly or daily.
